           Have you ever stepped out of bed in the morning only to feel a sharp pain in the bottom of your heel?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Many people describe it as feeling like they're stepping on a Lego, a nail, or even a bruise. The strange part? After walking for a few minutes, it often starts to feel a little better.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            If that sounds familiar, you may be experiencing
           &#xD;

           What Is Plantar Fasciitis?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

            The plantar fascia is a
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           strong band of connective tissue
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            that runs along the bottom of your foot from your heel bone to the base of your toes.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Think of it like the
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           bowstring of your foot
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           . It helps support your arch and stores energy every time you walk, run, or stand.

           When this tissue is exposed to more stress than it can comfortably handle over time, it can become irritated and painful.

           Although many people still use the term plantar fasciitis, researchers now know that long-standing cases often involve changes in the tissue rather than ongoing inflammation alone. That's one reason treatment often focuses on improving tissue health and gradually restoring function.

           Why Does It Hurt More in the Morning?

           This is one of the questions I hear most often.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Overnight, while you're sleeping, your foot naturally rests in a slightly pointed position. During those hours, the plantar fascia can tighten slightly.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           When you take your first few steps in the morning, that tissue is suddenly stretched under your body weight. Those first steps can feel quite painful until the tissue begins to warm up and move more comfortably.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This "first-step pain" is one of the classic features of plantar fasciitis.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?
          &#xD;

           There isn't usually one single cause. More often, it's the result of several factors working together.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Common contributors include:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Standing for long periods
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

            Walking on hard surfaces
           &#xD;

           Even small changes in activity can sometimes overload the plantar fascia if your body isn't used to them.

            Pain that's worse with the first few steps in the morning
           &#xD;

            Pain after sitting for a while
           &#xD;

            Tenderness near the inside of the heel
